Neighbourhood Partnership Area:

Frome Vale, Hillfields and Eastville

Oldbury Court is a beautiful estate, combining woodland and riverside paths with historic parkland and an excellent new children’s play area. Only three miles from Bristol city centre, the estate is a great place for a family day out, featuring big green spaces and picnic areas, and is popular with walkers for its varied landscape and panoramic views. Open all year round, there are two car parks, open 8am to dusk, Oldbury Court car park off Oldbury Court Road and Snuff Mills car park at the end of River View, Stapleton.

Flat tarmac paths suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs provide access to the new play area from the main estate entrance adjacent to the Oldbury Court car park.

Facilities and activities

Oldbury Court has an exciting new destination play area centred on a water and sand play zone with a pirate play ship. There’s also a new café kiosk with terrace seating providing refreshments. Designed to be accessible for wheelchair users the play area includes an accessible roundabout, seesaw and nest seat swing amongst other equipment suitable for disabled children. There is also a variety of play equipment for toddlers including toddler swings, springy seesaw, springies, toddler spinner and embankment slide. Equipment for older children include a dramatic rock feature with rope bridge, a slingshot, dish spinner, swings and zip wire. The whole play area is fenced to be dog free and includes lots of natural play features including logs, boulders, a woodland den area, picnic tables and plenty of open grass to run around on.

Recent developments

The construction of the new Oldbury Court play area and Cafe was completed in spring 2010 under the Play Pathfinder programme funded by the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

This site was chosen as a site for investment under the Pathfinder programme through an assessment process, which involved a review of location, appropriate size, visibility, recent investment (or lack of), relationship to other regeneration programmes, child density and expected relationship within the emerging Plans for the Parks and Green Space Strategy.

The budget for the site was determined by the size and potential scope of the project in relation to the Pathfinder resources, together with the identification of any additional funding available from sources other than Pathfinder.
