Fun Ideas for Play

Play more and Change4Life!

Did you know that if we carry on as we are, 9 out of 10 of today’s kids risk growing up with dangerous levels of fat in their bodies? This can lead to serious illnesses like heart disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes in later life.

We all want our children to grow up to be happy, healthy adults but it can sometimes be hard to know how to achieve this. Change4Life is here to help us all eat well, move more and live longer.

Playing is a great way for kids to be up and about and keeping active, whether playing organised games, or just moving around and enjoying themselves.

The Play4Life information packs give you loads of tips and information that make playing fun for everyone. You’ll find advice on how to support children to play indoors and outdoors as well as ways to keep them safe while they’re burning off all that energy. It also covers reasons why play is so good for kids, like building their confidence and helping them develop new skills. So think to yourself 'where are the parks near me with playground?' and get out there, get fit whilst having fun!

Can you achieve ‘80by18’? 80by18 has been designed to help and encourage young people to enjoy all our amazing city has to offer.

The 80by18 team asked lots of different people about what things should be on the list, and the people of Bristol chose 80 activities that aren't just fun and free, but will help you change the world, face the future and improve your life.

The challenge is - can you do all 80?

In the meantime, here are some park-friendly challenges!

Picnic in the city
Whatever the weather – find a great spot in one of Bristol’s parks and eat outside.

Make someone smile
See if you can make a stranger smile – even better – laugh.

Get mobile without your mobile
Leave all your technology at home for a day.

Get out of the house and play outside
Find the nearest place you can, find some friends or some neighbour’s kids, and set up a street-game with at least 8 people.

Climb a tree
Simply put: Find a tree and climb it.

Take over Bristol on a bike
Take part in the critical mass bike ride that happens every month and take over Bristol’s roads on a bike.

Get to all the different skate parks in Bristol
There are more than seven skate parks in and around Bristol, you have to visit all of them over a weekend.

Bio-blitz your backyard
Choose an area somewhere near where you live and record every single living thing within it.

Create a new Bristol game
Invent a new game that your friends can play; it might involve a computer, or be played outside in the city. Why not both?

Build a den
Build a den from discarded wood and other materials in Leigh Woods.

Build your own Concorde
Make paper aeroplanes with your friends and see whose will fly the furthest.

Thinking to yourself 'which parks in my area can I make these happen in'? Use our park list page to pick the perfect location.

Playing Out in your street

Playing Out supports residents to organise street play sessions so that children can play freely and actively, make friends and build a sense of belonging to their neighbourhood. Started in Bristol in 2009 by two neighbours, Playing Out is a not-for-profit organisation giving help and information to residents in Bristol and across the UK who want to open up their residential streets for play.

Visit their website for ideas, inspiration and free resources to help you organise playing out on your street.

Also, why not get stuck in to this a great campaign run and promoted by The National Trust: Activities, scrapbooks, videos and more over on "50 things to do before you're 11 and 3 quarters"
